On 20th February 1915 the 4th Cameron Highlanders arrived in France where they joined 24 Brigade of 8th Division and went into the trenches for the first time on 28th February at Rue de Bacquerot near Laventie. On 10th March, 1915, the opening day of the Battle of Neuve Chapelle, 24 Brigade were in reserve while 23 and 25 Brigades attacked the enemy positions. 4th Cameron Highlanders were employed as a trench garrison and in the very heavy artillery bombardment, laid down by both sides throughout the day, they suffered about 30 casualties. One of these was Thomas Henderson who was killed.
